Binance TR trading journal: what your lira profit is worth in dollars

Why a Binance TR trade that made money in lira can be a loss in dollars, with a worked example, how to get your history into a trading journal, and why Convert transactions need recording separately.

If you trade lira pairs such as BTC/TRY on Binance TR, there are two ways to read your profit: in lira or in dollars. When a trade stays open for a while, the two can give different answers for the same trade, sometimes opposite ones. A trade that made money in lira can be a loss in dollars.

This post shows how that happens with an example, and covers what to watch for when you bring your Binance TR history into a trading journal.

A profit in lira, a loss in dollars

Say you buy 0.01 BTC on BTC/TRY at 3,000,000 TRY and pay 30,000 TRY. That day the dollar is 34.00 TRY. Months later you sell the same 0.01 BTC at 3,600,000 TRY and receive 36,000 TRY. On the day you sell, the dollar is 41.00 TRY.

LineLiraDollars
Buy30,000 TRY30,000 / 34.00 = $882.35
Sell36,000 TRY36,000 / 41.00 = $878.05
Result+6,000 TRY (+20%)−$4.30

In lira the trade made 20%. In dollars it lost a little, because over the same months the lira fell against the dollar faster than BTC's lira price rose. Fees are left out of the example to keep it simple.

What matters is that each side is converted at the rate on its own day: the buy at the buy day's rate, the sell at the sell day's rate. Converting the whole trade at today's rate hides the difference completely, because both sides are divided by the same number and the 20% in lira carries straight over into dollars.

Which reading is right depends on what you are aiming for. If you are trying to hold your savings steady in dollars or gold, a profit in lira can mislead on its own.

Getting your Binance TR history into a journal

Binance TR is a separate exchange from global Binance and issues its own API keys. Your global Binance key does not work on Binance TR. A read-only key created on Binance TR is all you need: it can see your trade history but can never trade or withdraw. The steps are in the Binance TR setup guide.

Two things are worth knowing.

The API cannot list the pairs you traded. Binance TR's API does not answer the question "which pairs has this account traded". A trading journal has to find those pairs another way, or some of your trades never show up.

Convert transactions are not in the API. Binance TR does not share the conversions you make with Convert with API keys, so no trading journal can import them automatically. If you used Convert to turn lira into USDT or a coin, you have to add that to the journal yourself. If you do not, the balances in your journal will not match your balances on Binance TR.

Binance TR in Viktury

When you add a Binance TR account in Viktury, you paste your read-only key. Viktury syncs your spot trades on lira pairs and on stablecoin pairs such as BTC/USDT on its own. You do not need to say which pairs you traded: Viktury works them out from your balances, deposits and withdrawals and checks each one for trades.

You can record a Convert yourself in a few seconds, and from then on it counts like any other trade. One side of the Convert has to be TRY or a dollar stablecoin.

You also choose how to read your results. Viktury can show your PnL in dollars, lira, BTC or gold.

Open a free Viktury account and add your read-only Binance TR key.

This is how Viktury shows a closed trade. R comes from the stop you set.
